This beautiful estate, bought by the Meslier family in 1972, has a 18 hectare vineyard that produces a traditional sauternes, and recognized as one of the Bordeaux’s grand crus liqueurs.
The Sémillon variety is cut into “côts”: by average, each strain is left with three inches loaded with only two yams. The Sémillon gives the wine its beautiful golden color, its cleanliness, its finesse, its vigour and its strength. As for the Sauvignon, it provides a very fine wine, with body, very aromatic, of a beautiful golden color. Its poda, also severe, is of the type Guyot sime of six yemes.
As tradition requires, the Château Raymond-Lafon vineyard is hand-fermented, by successive selections. The harvest of a grain depends on the state of ripeness of the grape and the evolution of Botrytis Cinerea, commonly known as “noble rot”. The harvest is therefore long, and can last up to two months, as our small team of skilled harvesters may be forced to perform from three to ten passes depending on the year.
Some days the quantity of grapes collected will not be able to produce, after pressing, more than one barrel of must. For a period of three years the aging is carried out in new barrels of oak duel. The fine grain of these and their tight texture due to a slow growth of the oaks (cut at an age between 180 and 250 years) give the wine delicate tannins that are released slowly and in small quantities without drowning it.
